Sharon Anglin Treat

Sharon Anglin Treat is the Executive Director of the National Legislative Association on Prescription Drug Prices, a nonpartisan organization of state legislators working jointly across state lines to reduce prescription drug prices and expand access. Prior to joining the Association in September 2004, Treat served 14 years in the Maine Legislature, including 8 years in the Senate and two as Senate Majority Leader in 2003-04.

During her years in the Maine Legislature, Treat also chaired the Health and Human Services, Judiciary, and Natural Resources Committees, and served as Assistant Democratic Floor Leader in 2002-03. Treat is an attorney and has practiced law with a nonprofit environmental organization, in state government and in private practice. She has taught environmental law at the University of Maine Law School and Colby and Bowdoin Colleges, and was the Coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program at Colby College from 2000-04.

  • Dirigo Health, Maine's first-in-the-nation uninsured health access law
  • First in the nation legislation regulating pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs)
  • Peer support programs for dislocated workers
  • Toxics use reduction and pollution prevention in industry and government and comprehensive laws to control the release of mercury into the environment
  • Telecommunications policy and the Maine school and library Internet network
  • Welfare reform emphasizing education and expanded supportive programs
  • Alternative dispute resolution for gas pipeline siting and "takings" disputes
  • Supporting family farms through financial planning, agricultural marketing and R & D
  • Encouraging "smart growth" and downtown redevelopment
  • Funding for school construction and renovation

Treat has an A.B. degree from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (1978) and has a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center (1982). She lives in Farmingdale, Maine with her partner Robert Collins.
